Why Brake Fluid Gets Contaminated

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid, which means it needs to be relatively incompressible. That rigidity of the fluid is vital for transferring and magnifying the power of the brakes so that you can stop when you need. However, this means that the brake fluid has very low water content, and since there’s water in the atmosphere, it can get contaminated with water over time and become more compressible. This causes your brakes to be much less responsive, hence the need for a brake fluid exchange.

When to Get a Brake Fluid Exchange

As we mentioned, brake fluid usually needs to be exchanged every 45,000 miles. However, if you notice your brakes getting soft or not braking as well, you might need a brake fluid exchange earlier.
